“We stepped out of the TARDIS and joined the long queue of happy and expectant customers waiting for the large wooden gates to open. Through gaps in the wooden panels we could see the stalls overflowing with goods that smiled at us and called to us saying “you know you want me!”. The crowd stands patiently and excitedly waiting for the doors to open. As time goes by, the doors remain closed and the padlock and chain look even bigger than they did at the beginning. It seems like an eternity and the doors are never unlocked and then…” you wake up realising it was only a dream….

For many SME owners this is not a mere dream or perception, it is their reality. But you hear from others and know yourself that “Customers are everywhere…” but do you know that most businesses have padlocked the doors and it has been created by their own actions, or more likely inaction – if only they knew it!

No matter how good, or unique the good or service on offer the gates remain padlocked. But it’s actually far worse than that. On occasions the doors open and a few customers squeeze through, buy a little, stay a while and then as if by magic disappear behind the padlocked doors. It’s rarely repeated because you never focused on what you did to make it happen. You put it down to being lucky as if that really exists for everyone in the busi- ness world.

The harsh, tough love is that despite all we know about business, 8 out of 10 businesses fail, not through lack of cash as many think and believe, but through lack of customers. So you’ve a 20% chance of success. Wouldn’t you like that to be 100% ?

Time for Change?

Let’s state a few facts at the start:

There is no magic wand to having a successful business.
The long way is to play at being an owner and if you’re lucky, have lots of cash to fall back on, and get the odd blip in sales you’ll survive.
The short cut is to understand you and your business, be clinically focused and do the hard work.

Who are We?

We’re not experts but experienced in business and life and are the first to say we’ve made mistakes. But we’ve come together as a Collaboration and are focused on number 3 above in our own businesses.
